On April 19, 1943, hundreds of Jews imprisoned in the Warsaw ghetto took up arms against the Nazis to prevent their deportation to an extermination camp. At that time, more than 300,000 people locked up in this ghetto had already been sent to die in the Treblinka camp.
This Wednesday, Warsaw is hosting the commemorations of the 80th anniversary of this uprising. The Israeli and German presidents will be there and are expected to visit the site of the former ghetto. Up to about 450,000 Jews were crowded into this area of about three square kilometers.
