We Own This City

This terrific six-episode miniseries from HBO, which details the gangsterization of an elite Baltimore police cell, is of exceptional quality. We Own This City is a multi-layered series. A federal investigation opens into institutionalized corruption in Baltimore, the FBI gets involved, colleagues of the hoodlum police officers wiretap them and things brew. Really, this is a blockbuster production.

A new day

Talking about trans people and what they go through is less and less taboo. The documentary series A New Day opens a great door by telling and showing a little-known reality, that of gender affirmation surgery. A delicate subject, which director Émilie Ricard-Harvey tackles with skill.

Bootlegger

Multidisciplinary artist, Caroline Monnet makes her way with conviction in the art world where each of her new works is welcomed with interest. His film Bootleggerhis first feature film, will, in our opinion, be part of this continuity.

Julia

The period miniseries Julia from HBO offered by the Crave platform, is available in French and English. It’s absolutely charming and cute. It’s comfort TV food as we like it: warm, generous and zero pretentious. With a few touches of madmen, Julia looks at the television debut of the most European of American chefs, Julia Child, played by the excellent British actress Sarah Lancashire, better than Meryl Streep in the film Julie & Juliareleased in 2009.

The Staircase

Millions of us were captivated by the extraordinary ‘true crime’ miniseries in 2018 The Staircase (suspicions in French version on Netflix). Now, is it worth watching the fictional miniseries? The Staircase from HBO, which derives from this jewel of “true crime” and which is offered on the Crave platform? Yes, absolutely.

The Batman

More than half of the story The Batman by Matt Reeves and Peter Craig is devoted to the search for clues, the decoding of enigmas and the interviews with very unwilling sources. It’s delicious! The reference will possibly escape those who do not play video games, but feel like they are in a game of the series Arkham is real. The brutal fights, the frenzied chases, the complex puzzles, the dark places, the constant rain, the silence of the alleys… We also think of the film Sevenby David Fincher.

King Richard

Any tennis fan will enjoy the period re-enactment, especially in the chapters dedicated to coaches Paul Cohen (Tony Goldwyn), with whom John McEnroe and Pete Sampras worked, and Rick Macci (Jon Bernthal). The tennis matches are also well recreated. The assembly would no doubt have benefited from being tightened up a little, but King Richard (King Richard: Beyond the Game in French version) remains a well-made, well-told film.

The Vinland Club

Mainstream film, period film, The Vinland Club is also a tribute to Quebec educators. A wink is also made to them in the end credits where, next to the name of each of the main actors, is that of a real teacher, religious or secular, inspiring. Decidedly, this film is woven of beautiful ideas until the end.

Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber

Spying on drivers, a public relations fiasco and surveillance of curious reporters is more than enough to give a three-star rating to Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber. Bonus: you don’t have to carry on frivolous conversation during your TV commute.

Maria Chapdelaine

With a duration of 2h 38min – 3 minutes longer than Dunes ! –, some viewers will no doubt find the contemplative experience a bit long, but Sébastien Pilote offers here a work that will go down in history as the indisputable and definitive version of Louis Hémon’s novel in the cinema. This fourth version, produced by a filmmaker who himself carries this story in his flesh, is thus fully justified.

Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty

Fascinating characters played by an all-star cast. The early 1980s in a city that shines brightly. A mix between documentary and pure entertainment. Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty tells the story of one of the most successful basketball teams in history during a frenzied era. This series is much more than a work on sport, it is a page of history.
