The war continues in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday April 10, and three sons of the Hamas leader were killed Wednesday in an Israeli strike. US President Joe Biden told Washington that Hamas must “move forward” on the proposal submitted to him for a ceasefire, while insisting that Israel did not authorize “not enough” help entering Gaza. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, for his part, considered that the recognition of a Palestinian state was “in the geopolitical interest of Europe”. Franceinfo summarizes what you need to remember from this day.

Israeli strike in Gaza kills three sons of Hamas leader

Three sons of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh were killed Wednesday in an Israeli strike in Gaza, the Palestinian official and the Israeli army announced, at a time when the Islamist movement is examining a proposed truce in the fighting. “I thank God for the honor given to us by the martyrdom of my three sons and some of my grandchildren”declared Ismaïl Haniyeh, from Doha, to the Qatari channel Al Jazeera. “The enemy targeted a car they were in”he added.

The Israeli military and domestic intelligence confirmed a targeted airstrike against the three men described as“military agents” of Hamas. Identified as Mohammad, Hazem and Amir Haniyeh, they “carried out terrorist activities in the central Gaza Strip”, according to the army. Four grandchildren of Ismail Haniyeh were also killed, Hamas wrote in a statement, denouncing a strike “perfidious and cowardly”. The Palestinian movement said the shooting occurred in the Shati refugee camp in Gaza City, north of the territory besieged by the Israeli army.

Israel ensures it is preparing access points to let aid enter the Gaza Strip

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said on Wednesday that recently announced measures to increase food deliveries to the besieged Gaza Strip were in the works. As Israel comes under pressure from many capitals to let more aid into the Palestinian territory, it has set a goal of reaching “500 trucks” delivery per day, a key figure for the United Nations.

Speaking to the press, Yoav Gallant also said that Israel planned to soon use the Israeli port of Ashdod, located 35 kilometers north of Gaza, to deliver aid. This measure had already been unveiled on Friday after a very firm warning from Washington, its main support, regarding the risk of famine for the civilian population trapped in Gaza. Israel also said that the Erez crossing point, between the Palestinian territory and southern Israel, currently closed, would be used to transport aid.

Hamas is “militarily defeated” in Gaza, assures Benny Gantz

Minister Benny Gantz, a member of the Israeli war cabinet, said Wednesday that Hamas was “militarily defeated” in the Gaza Strip. “Its fighters have been eliminated or are in hiding. Its capabilities are reduced and we will continue to strike what remains”he said, adding that “victory will come step by step”. “We will enter Rafah. We will return to Khan Younes”a southern city from which the Israeli army announced its withdrawal on Sunday, he also said.

Joe Biden says Hamas “must move forward” on ceasefire proposal

Joe Biden said Wednesday in Washington that Hamas must “move forward” on the proposal submitted to him for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the agreement on the hostages held in the Palestinian territory. “The ball is in Hamas’ court, they must move forward with the proposal that was made to them”, said the American president, during a joint press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Joe Biden also declared that Israel does not allow “not enough” help to enter Gaza, where the war has been going on for more than six months.

The day before, the American president also spoke out against the policy pursued by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the Gaza Strip, describing it as“error”and calling on Israel to conclude a ceasefire. “I don’t agree with his approach”, he added during an interview with the Spanish-speaking channel Univision. These are among the US president’s harshest comments against the Israeli leader since the start of the war.

Pedro Sánchez believes that recognition of a Palestinian state “is in Europe’s interest”

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, the most critical voice within the European Union vis-à-vis Israel, said Wednesday that recognition of a Palestinian state was “in the geopolitical interest of Europe” and reaffirmed that Madrid was “ready” to do it. However, he did not give a date. “The international community will not be able to help the Palestinian state if it does not recognize its existence”he declared in front of the Spanish deputies.
