The day after deadly Russian strikes, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Washington (United States) on Tuesday, July 9, to participate in a NATO summit, intended to confirm the allies’ support for his country at war. Here’s what you need to know from the day.

A day of mourning in kyiv

kyiv observed a day of mourning on Tuesday after Russian strikes killed dozens of people across the country. The toll is likely to rise as searches continue through the rubble.

The attack hit the Okhmatdyt children’s hospital in kyiv. “Intentionally launching attacks against a protected hospital (by international law) is a war crime”denounced the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Joyce Msuya, on Tuesday. The American president denounced these strikes and promised Ukraine military aid “to protect its cities and its civilians.”

Volodymyr Zelensky in Washington to attend NATO summit

The Ukrainian president has arrived in Washington to attend a NATO summit. “We are fighting to get more air defense” And “more F-16 aircraft”which is expected to be delivered to Ukraine soon, said Volodymyr Zelensky in his daily video address. Russia said on Tuesday that it would follow with “maximum attention” this summit of the 75th anniversary of the Atlantic Alliance.

The Ukrainian president will also meet with his American counterpart in Washington on Thursday, on the sidelines of the summit. The aim of this meeting will be to reaffirm the “unwavering support” from the United States to Ukraine, White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said.

International Atomic Energy Agency convenes extraordinary council meeting

A meeting of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency will take place on Friday at the request of kyiv, following massive Russian strikes on the country. “Following a letter sent to me by the representative of Ukraine (…), I inform the members of the holding of a meeting” at the organization’s headquarters in Vienna, Austria, wrote the current president of the Council, Argentine ambassador Holger Martinsen, in a letter seen by AFP. The body, which includes 35 countries, usually meets every three months, but can occasionally meet at the request of one of the member states.
