UN denounces ‘unacceptable’ attacks on rescue workers in Lebanon

“The tragic events of the last 36 hours have led to numerous losses of life and injuries in southern Lebanon. Up to eleven civilians were killed in a single day, including ten rescue workers”declared the UN coordinator for Lebanon, Imran Riza.

For almost six months, violence has pitted the Israeli army against the Lebanese Islamist movement Hezbollah and its allies who claim to want to support Hamas in its war with Israel in the Gaza Strip.

Still no “immediate ceasefire” in sight

Clashes between the Israeli army and Hamas continued on Thursday, particularly near the towns of Gaza (north of the enclave) and Khan Younes (in the south). The Israeli army continues its operation launched on March 18 in the al-Chifa hospital complex in Gaza City, and near the Nasser and al-Amal hospitals in Khan Younes. She said it had killed dozens of fighters in the al-Amal sector.

The Palestinian news agency Wafa also records clashes in different localities of the Occupied West Bank. In 24 hours, the Hamas Ministry of Health recorded 66 additional deaths, bringing its death toll since October 7 to 32,552.

Netanyahu wants to “enter Rafah”

A senior American official said Wednesday that Benjamin Netanyahu’s services had “expressed that they would like to find a new date to organize the meeting dedicated to Rafah”. This meeting, to discuss the Israeli ground offensive plan on the city of the Gaza Strip where more than 1.5 million Palestinians are crowded, was canceled by the Jewish state after the abstention of the United States during the vote on a resolution of the Security Council of the UN calling for a “immediate ceasefire” in the Gaza Strip.

Later Thursday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reaffirmed his determination to launch a ground offensive in Rafah. “We hold the northern Gaza Strip as well as Khan Younes. We have cut the Gaza Strip in two and are preparing to enter Rafah.”he told families of soldiers held hostage in the Palestinian territory.
