If the vaccination campaign for children began in the United States on Wednesday, November 3, the subject is still debated in France. Could the authorities give their green light soon? Elements of answer with the journalist and doctor Damien Mascret.

Will the French authorities end up authorizing the vaccination against the coronavirus of children aged 5 to 11, as in the United States? “Probably, but it may not be mandatory”, estimates the journalist and doctor, Damien Mascret, on the set of the 20 Hours. “In terms of vaccination, we look at two important things: the individual benefit / risk, but also the collective benefit.” For children, however, the individual benefit / risk is “not easy”, emphasizes the doctor, because they have very little risk of developing serious forms of coronavirus.

However, US authorities have calculated that by vaccinating one million children aged 5 to 11, they could prevent 59,000 infections and 241 hospitalizations. In France, where there are fewer obese children, the individual benefit / risk would not be the same, “but there would at least be the collective benefit”, specifies Damien Mascret, adding: “The less the virus circulates among children, the less it will infect seniors.”
