The Minister Delegate for Local Authorities, Dominique Faure, presented Wednesday, May 17, a plan to combat violence against elected officials, the main measures of which were communicated to franceinfo by the minister’s entourage, more than a week after the resignation of Yannick Morez, mayor of Saint-Brevin-les-Pins (Loire-Atlantique).

Creation of a “security package”

In particular, the government wants to create a “security pack” with more than 3,400 referents “attacks on elected officials” in police stations and gendarmeries across France. These referents will be the privileged interlocutors of the elected officials and will take their complaints if necessary. These complaints can also be made directly to elected officials or to the town hall.

Strengthen the “elected alarm” system

Among other measures, the government wishes to strengthen the “elected alarm” system. Each elected official will be able to report if he feels in danger or faces a risky situation. In the event of a call to 17, the request will be considered a priority, which may lead to a reinforcement of law enforcement patrols at the home of the elected official or at his town hall.

A “center for analysis and the fight against attacks on elected officials”

The government also highlights the creation, this Wednesday, of the “center for analysis and the fight against attacks on elected officials”, which franceinfo echoed on May 11. This center will make it possible to set up a “database” and a map of violence against elected officials. The entourage of the Minister of Territorial Communities also promises a reinforced mobilization of the Pharos platform in order to detect hateful content online more quickly.

Toughen criminal penalties

Finally, the government anticipates a future law on the repression of this violence against elected officials, which will be presented to Parliament by the fall. This text will strengthen the criminal sanctions against the perpetrators of violence. The penalties will be the same as in the case of attacks by the police. The minister’s entourage wants this text to be examined in Parliament by the fall.
