Street harassment: what solutions for the many women affected?
Street harassment: what solutions for the many women affected?
(France 2)
75% say they have already suffered a sexual assault in a public space. Street harassment is a real burden for many women. Solutions are being developed to combat this phenomenon.
In the streets of Paris, you don’t have to look long to find them. There are many women who are victims of harassment. “It has happened to me many times to be followed, whistled at, insulted when I do not respond to advances, (…) and once to be chased with a knife”, confides a young girl. Her friend confirms: “We don’t know how to react at the time, because we are in shock.”
The fight against this phenomenon is being organized
In the street or on public transport, 75% of women say they have been sexually assaulted at least once in their life. Faced with this permanent threat, some try to protect themselves as best they can, by exposing those who harass them on social networks. Solutions are also offered to them, such as Umay, an application created by Pauline Vanderquand, which allows them to locate “safe places” in the surrounding area.
