Fascinating solo journey of the incandescent singer, guitarist and composer of the southern rock group Alabama Shakes. A year after the dissolution of the group, Howard released a first album (I like, 2019) transporting his powerful voice into the world of jazz, soul and hip-hop, with a good dose of blues; she does it again on this excellent second album, composed, performed and produced by herself, with a helping hand from the prolific Canadian director Shawn Everett. The clarity of his overall vision of the project is impressive: everything here is in its place, perfectly calibrated, from the gentle introduction leading to the strong funk-rock groove of the title track, followed by the complex Red Flags again featuring a high caliber rhythm section (jazz drummer Nate Smith, bassist Zac Cockrell, ex-Alabama Shakes). On Prove It to You further, she even ventures into house music, brilliantly. Howard seems to have the same grandiose and ingenious vision as the late Prince: his work is ambitious and full of good grooves.
