On the evening of Monday, July 15, a soldier from Operation Sentinel was attacked with a knife. The suspect, who was apprehended, was already known to the police, particularly for mental health issues. Convicted of domestic violence, Christian I. was mainly found to be the perpetrator of a murder in 2018, before finally being declared criminally irresponsible. At the time, he had stabbed a 22-year-old man twice and killed him.
In the previous case, Christian I. had been hospitalized by force. However, the law provides for a possibility of discharge. If a first team of psychiatrists gives a favorable opinion, confirmed by a second team, then the prefect can end the hospitalization. This discharge can be accompanied by prohibitions. According to associations of victims’ families, the prohibitions are poorly followed. The investigation will have to determine how the suspect was released.
