The investigation should make it possible to determine the origin of the tragedy which occurred in Marseilles, on the night of Saturday 8 to Sunday 9 April. At this stage, the preferred hypothesis is a gas leak.

On the evening of Monday April 10, the area is still not accessible to technical and scientific police investigators. It is impossible for them to begin their investigations and the readings of clues in the still burning rubble. Gas is, however, the preferred track. The hypothesis is based on testimonies from neighbors, who reported a strong smell of gas just after the explosion and the collapse of the building.

A complex investigation

If there had been a leak in the middle of the night in an enclosed area, the gas would have accumulated. The simple act of flipping a switch or other electrical equipment could have been enough to blow everything up. “It could be a toaster, it could be an electrical source, a household appliance. In very rare circumstances, it could be a cell phone,” specifies Arnaud Wilm, spokesperson for civil security.

A track is privileged, but the investigation opened for manslaughter considers all the tracks. According to the experts, the chances are slim of precisely reconstructing the sequence of events.
