Once upon a time there was an animal that had no sharp fangs, no fur, no amazing strength, it didn’t even run very fast, so it had to find an ally.
Christelle Crozier behavioral veterinarian discusses the reasons why for millennia we have maintained this special relationship with domestic canines.
How faithful he is, he only lacks speech… These words are part of his daily practice.
Humans have selected dogs for their qualities: guarding, hunting, carrying loads, pulling
but above all for their communication skills with us and the great empathy he shows.
It meets our needs:
- love, attachment,
- self-esteem (being responsible for a living being and taking on this task)
We are responsible for what we have tamed. As Saint Exupéry wrote.
- of social recognition, because he is well educated, or because he is a purebred dog, because he is well groomed, because he is beautiful…
Christelle Crozier then tells us the story of this old lady, a penniless chatelaine, who had an old German shepherd. When he died, the lady asked Christelle to find her another big dog, adding that it was vital for her. Our young veterinarian offered him a female Rottweiler which allowed this elderly person to live a few more years. How ? Because the lady no longer had enough money to heat her large home and the role of the dog was also to provide her with warmth by lying against her at night.
The granddaughter who lived abroad then took in the female Rottweiler who had fulfilled her role so well with the grandmother.
