The slogan “From the river to the sea” has been frequently used in recent weeks in rallies in support of Palestine around the world. What is its origin ?
“From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.” This formula (in French: “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free”) has often been used since the start of the war between Hamas and Israel by pro-Palestinian demonstrators. This slogan is used on social networks, or even by political figures. A formula, often simplified by “From the river to the sea”which sparked a lively controversy.
A slogan from the 1960s
Defended by some as a demand for an end to discrimination against Palestinians living in Israel or in the occupied territories, it is denounced by others as a call for the total destruction of the Jewish state. The slogan originally originated in the 1960s and comes from the Palestine Liberation Organization, which called for the creation of a single state that would stretch from the Mediterranean (“the sea”) to Jordan (“the river”).
