In the “Behind our labels” section of Tuesday, February 8, France 2 returns to the techniques of the giants of the food industry to make you pay more. They reduce the quantity of products, but keep the same packaging and the same price. This is called “shrinkflation”.

In front of a large surface sign, the consumers questioned by France 2 are unanimous: the prices of the products remain the same, but their quantity decreases. This technique is called “shrinkflation”, which consists of reducing the quantity of a product to hide the increase in the price per kilo, while keeping the same packaging.

The NGO Foodwatch, warns that “shrinkflation” also exists in France. To respond to criticism, the brands explain that they do not practice this technique, but that this drop in quantity is due to new recipes. However, in times of rising raw material costs and annual price negotiations with large retailers, some manufacturers recognize anonymously that the temptation to resort to this marketing technique is great. A lawyer points out that there is nothing illegal in this process, as long as the volume indicated on the packaging corresponds to the actual volume.
