“What happened is indeed a consequence of the failure of our migration policy”said Thursday, June 8 on franceinfo François-Xavier Bellamy, MEP LR, vice-president of LR, after the knife attack which left six injured, including four children in Annecy.

François-Xavier Bellamy denounces “a situation of carelessness”. He assures that “someone who has obtained asylum in a European country cannot leave it to travel throughout Europe, except for very strict reasons of family reunification or the application for a job”.

According to him, the suspect of the aggression “had not applied for a job, had no reason for family reunification”. The man arrested, a 31-year-old Syrian, had joined France eight months ago after a refusal of naturalization in Sweden where he lived and where he had obtained a residence permit in 2013. “It is absolutely essential today that asylum applications be made outside the borders of the European Union”insists the MEP.

The assailant, of Syrian nationality “passed through Turkey where he resided for a long time”, emphasizes François-Xavier Bellamy. The vice-president of LR believes that the man should have been able “applying for asylum in Turkey so that it can be answered there whether or not he was eligible for asylum in our country. And then we would have avoided tragedies of this nature”.

“What we need to talk about are the flaws in our migration policy and that concerns us all”argues the MEP. “It’s not a question of party. It’s the issue for the safety of the French which concerns all families, all parents who tomorrow will go to public parks, and wonder if they will have to meet someone. ‘one who will seek to stab their child.’ “The question that arises today is “how is the state finally going to protect them?”adds François-Xavier Bellamy. “The question today is not: are political parties using too strong words to describe a situation like this?”
