Tuesday evening, May 9, a gendarme opened fire in a synagogue in Djerba, Tunisia, killing at least two people, including a Frenchman. Valery Lerouge takes stock of the profile of the killer, Wednesday, May 10, live from Djerba.

A Marseille father is one of the five victims of the attack on the Djerba synagogue, perpetrated on the evening of Tuesday May 9. The assailant targeted the place of worship in the midst of a Jewish pilgrimage. But was it an anti-Semitic act? “The Tunisian authorities seem convinced that the man acted alone, but they are still looking for the exact motivations since the gendarme first targeted one of his colleagues from the National Guard before attacking the Jewish community”explains Valéry Lerouge, live from Djerba.

No killer profile information

For the moment, no information filters on the profile of the killer or his claims. “But this killing awakens a trauma here, because this same synagogue had been targeted by an attack in 2002”, notes the journalist. The truck bomb killed 21 people and the attack was claimed by Al Qaeda. Tunisia was targeted by another attack in 2015, which caused a drop in tourism, which the authorities now fear.
