The composition of Michel Barnier’s new government was officially announced on Saturday, September 21, 2024. An alliance between the presidential camp, the Modem and Les Républicains was formed to conclude the episode of the dissolution of the National Assembly. But what do the French think of the choices made by the Prime Minister?
Nearly three months after voting, there are new ministers and many questions for the French. Is the new government representative? No, according to several left-wing voters, disappointed by the choice of ministers. “We vote left and we end up with a right-wing government, our voice is not taken into account”lamented a left-wing voter. A right-leaning government that will not have a majority in the National Assembly. The presidential camp and the Republican Right will, in fact, occupy 213 seats and try to form an alliance.
Is a coalition between the two parties sustainable? In any case, this is good news for voters in the centre and the right. “I think it’s great that we can get along.”said one voter. But the new government coalition is at the mercy of an alliance of convenience between the National Rally and the New Popular Front. If they decide, together, to vote for a motion of censure, the Barnier government will fall.
