Nuclear power is a divisive subject, both among candidates for the presidential election and among voters. The newspaper of 12/13 gives, Thursday, March 31, the floor to the French.

What do the French think of nuclear power? Séverine, from Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône), takes care of a parents’ association. She said to herself “a little in between” and believes that “Clinging only to nuclear power can be dangerous for the future”. In Lille (Nord), Mehdi, a law student, is located “rather on the yes side”. As for the candidates for the presidential election, many of them want to build new reactors and develop nuclear power even further. This is the case of Emmanuel Macron, Valérie Pécresse, Marine Le Pen, Éric Zemmour, Nicolas Dupont-Aignan, Jean Lassalle and Fabien Roussel.

Séverine, from Marseille, does not agree, and recalls in particular that nuclear waste “remain for eternity”. To avoid waste, other candidates want to get out of nuclear power: Anne Hidalgo, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, Yannick Jadot and Philippe Poutou, by 2045 or 2050. Mehdi, the Lille student, does not believe it. “100% renewable requires crazy conditions”, he said. On set, journalist Adrien Rohard reminds us that nuclear energy now represents 70% of our production, compared to only 13% for hydraulics or 7.9% for wind power.
