Eight young men convicted for their participation in the molotov cocktail attack on two police officers in Viry-Châtillon in October 2016 were cleared in April 2021. In the meantime, they have spent time in prison. Seven of them have claimed compensation from the courts, and will get it. But how much are three years behind bars worth?
For years, Brandon Potico has been accused of having been among the arsonists of police cars in Viry-Châtillon (Essonne), where two officials were seriously injured on October 8, 2016. It took two trials for the charge against him and seven others collapses. The anonymous witness who denounced him ended up losing all credibility. Now cleared, Brandon Potico will be compensated for the damage suffered.
100,000 euros for three years in prison
The young man, a minor at the time, spent three years behind bars. “I quit school in ninth grade, since I went straight to prison. I couldn’t just do my three years of high school like everyone else, and after that see what I want to do in life“, he laments. He will receive 100,000 euros, a sum that he and his lawyer had hoped would be much higher. “In the best-known cases, (…) we are actually talking in millions of euros”explains Sarah Mauger-Poliak.
The young man will use to pay his lawyers and start a new life. He won’t call. “It will still take a lot of time, and I want to get it over with, to move forward clearly in my life.“, he confides. An investigation is still open against certain police officers, for fraud in judgment and forgery in writing by a person holding public authority.
