Ahead of Yannick Jadot and Jean-Luc Mélenchon, Christiane Taubira won the popular primary. More than 392,000 people voted in this election, which ended on Sunday 30 January.
The popular primary has delivered its verdict: the former Keeper of the Seals, Christiane Taubira, finished at the top of the ballot. More than 392,000 people voted, a total higher than the primary of the ecologists or that of the Republicans. But of the seven candidates in the running, three of them had announced that they would not recognize the ballot: Yannick Jadot and Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who came second and third respectively, as well as Anne Hidalgo.
Some left-wing sympathizers want to be optimistic. “It’s an unprecedented movement that pushes for us to have a single candidate in the presidential election. It’s a very important step”, says a man. Christiane Taubira now hopes that this success will be a springboard for her candidacy for the presidential election and that her legitimacy will emerge strengthened. “You especially wanted to offer the left, ecology, the momentum that allows you to go, to consider, to build essential victories”, she reacted after the announcement of the results. But the union remains very uncertain. For now, according to the latest polls, none of the left-wing candidates is able to qualify for the second round.
