Since the beginning of the year, more than 60,000 hectares of forest have burned in France. What are the consequences of fires on the environment?

In 2022, more than one million tonnes of CO2 were released in France, due to the fires which have already ravaged more than 60,000 hectares of vegetation since the start of the year. “We have to worry about these fires (…) which are very clearly linked to these very hot periods and these dry spells”says Jean Jouzel, climatologist and former vice-president of the Giec (Intergovernmental Group of Experts on Climate Change), Friday August 12, in the 11 p.m. of franceinfo.

“These climatic extremes which are repeated more intensely and more frequently are due to our activities”he continues. “We must adapt to global warming, which will continue. If we want to preserve, for today’s young people, conditions to which they can adapt in the second half of this century, it is now that ‘we must act”believes Jean Jouzel.
