By playing with the codes of new wave, the American singer-songwriter (and actress, and soon to be a psychologist!) Sharon Van Etten almost manages to make us dance to a song like Mistakes, which is far from usual. What a contrast with the abrasive Remind Me Tomorrow published in 2019, if not in his way of questioning his existence with his exquisite and incisive pen. This sixth career album seems even more painful, the musician tackling the war (on the epic Anythinga reminder of her previous recordings), pandemic anguish and her new role as mother (magnificent ballad Home to Me) through these ten new songs, mostly recorded in his new home studio in California. And always, this deep voice, this hypnotic timbre attracting comparisons with Siouxsie Sioux, even more so on songs like I’ll Try and Headspace. Always a finger on the pulse of the world, Van Etten confirms to be one of the greatest voices of his generation.
