Wet Leg | Candy ★★★★

At school, we wished Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers were our best friends. The two young British women form the duo Wet Leg. They are under contract with the Domino label and they will perform in Osheaga on July 31st.

Their music recalls the beautiful era of the decade 1995-2005, with guitars that bite into pop with insolence and carelessness. It’s sprinkled with references that aren’t subtle, but it’s ear candy all the same. Think of the Breeders, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Angel Olsen, Elastica, The Strokes and Pulp (one song is even titled supermarket).

Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers rhyme Diet Coke with woke. One of the duo’s songs is titled WetDream. Another is rather called lounge chair, a kind of homage to horizontal idleness, which leads to a D grade at school. It’s about introducing a boy to his parents, not waking up in the morning. And why not resume the agreements of The Man Who Sold the World by David Bowie on I Don’t Wanna Go Out ?

In 2022, rare are the buzz like the one surrounding Wet Leg. There are even several perfect scores on the Metacritic site. However, Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers are not just the puppets of a nostalgic pop-rock formula. They have spirit, irreverence and a formidable sense of melody. They also show a more serious introspection on the final piece. Too Late Now.

The duo’s debut album may not make history in the rock ledger, but it’s a twenties slideshow with perfectly euphoric effect for spring.
