WestJet says operations have ‘stabilized’ after strike

(Calgary) WestJet says its operations have “stabilized” after a mechanics strike over the long weekend upended the plans of thousands of Canadians.

About 680 workers walked out on Friday night despite a directive for binding arbitration from federal Labour Minister Seamus O’Regan.

An agreement in principle was reached on Sunday evening and the airline said in a statement on Monday that further cancellations would be necessary in the coming days.

WestJet says it expects minimal future cancellations due to the strike, with 30 on Wednesday and eight on Thursday. No strike-related cancellations are expected Friday.

The airline says the total number of cancellations due to the strike stands at 1,171.

Workers have yet to vote on the tentative agreement, which the union says gives mechanics a 30 percent increase in total compensation over the five-year contract.
