Wes Anderson, Maïwenn, The Weeknd… What to remember from the official selection

Thierry Frémaux unveiled, Thursday, the films selected in the different categories for this 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival.

This is the press conference that all movie lovers are waiting for. The general delegate of the Cannes Film Festival Thierry Frémaux, accompanied by Iris Knobloch, the president, unveiled, Thursday, April 13, the films selected in the different categories of this 76th edition which will take place from May 16 to 27. The return of Takeshi Kitano, the presence of Wes Anderson and Maïwenn… France 3 Côte d’Azur sums up what you need to remember from this press conference.

  • An abundant “Un certain regard” selection

The opening will be with animal kingdom, by Thomas Cailley, the director of fighters, already celebrated in Cannes. Here is the full selection:

Thierry Frémaux has announced the return of certain directors who are regulars at the festival in this category. The Brazilian Kleber Mendonça Filho will be present with Ghost Portraits, a documentary on cinemas. But it is above all the presence of German filmmaker Wim Wenders that is striking with a documentary called The Sound of Time.

British director Steve McQueen, known for Hungerwill also unveil a documentary, Occupied City, on the occupation of Amsterdam during the Second World War.

  • Takeshi Kitano back in the “Cannes Première” category

The Japanese director, author ofKikujiro Summer or of Hana bi returns to Cannes with Kubi, a samurai comedy. The other films selected in this category are time to love, by Katell Quillévéré, Cerrar los ojos, by Victor Erice, Bonnard, Pierre and Marthe by Martin Provost.

Acidby Just Philippot, the director of The Cloudstarring Guillaume Canet, will be presented in midnight screenings, a category that most often hosts genre films.

  • “Indiana Jones” and Martin Scorsese out of competition

We already knew it: on May 20, American director Martin Scorsese will present his new film Killers of the Flower Moon at Canes. This is the first time since 1986 that the filmmaker has presented a film at the mythical international festival of the 7th art.

The new IndianaJones will also be at the 76th Cannes Film Festival. The latter will also pay an “exceptional tribute” to his actor, Harrison Ford, 80 years old.

Among the other films presented out of competition, cobwebby Kim Jee-woon and TheIdol, by Sam Levinson. The festival therefore makes room for this highly anticipated series, created by the author ofEuphoria. The Weeknd, shares the poster with Lily-Rose Depp.

This is the queen category of the Fortnight and Thierry Frémaux insisted on the fact that “these are cinema films”. Note the presence of directors well known to the general public such as Wim Wenders, Ken Loach, Nani Moretti or Todd Haynes. Wes Anderson, a regular on the Croisette, will also be present. After The French Dispatchhe once again brought together a procession of stars, from Tilda Swinton to Adrien Brody via Tom Hanks, for Asteroid City.

French side, Jeanne du Barry by Maïwenn, with Johnny Depp is also part of the selection. The film directed by the Frenchwoman, which marks the great return to the screen of the star of Pirates of the Caribbean, will open on May 16, and will be released simultaneously in French theaters, organizers announced on Wednesday. A selection that will be completed later, announced Thierry Frémaux.

Note that there are no animated films for the moment.

  • Six directors in competition, a record

Six directors will be in the running for the Palme d’Or at the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival which is to be held from May 16 to 27 on the Croisette, a record in the history of the Festival, according to the list unveiled Thursday by the delegate General of the Thierry Frémaux Festival.

Among these women, two French women, directors Catherine Breillat and Justine Triet. Also note the presence of a young Senegalese filmmaker Ramata-Toulaye Sy and the Tunisian Kaouther Ben Hania. The film which will open the festival, “Jeanne du Barry” (out of competition), is also signed by a director: the Frenchwoman Maïwenn.
