Werder Bremen secured a convincing 4-2 away victory against VfL Wolfsburg, ending the hosts’ winless streak at the Volkswagen Arena. The match saw Bremen equalize just before halftime and dominate the second half, with goals from Felix Agu, Marvin Ducksch, and Marco Grüll. Despite Wolfsburg starting strong with a goal from Tiago Tomàs, they couldn’t hold on as they fell to their fifth consecutive home defeat, leaving them without a win in over five months.
Werder Bremen broke Wolfsburg’s home advantage with a well-earned 4:2 victory, marking their third away win in four games. This impressive performance propelled Bremen to eighth place in the Bundesliga standings after the seventh matchday.
Despite a strong start, VfL Wolfsburg ended up on the losing side as Werder Bremen showcased their away prowess once again. After initially taking the lead, the task of recovering from a 2:4 defeat leaves Wolfsburg still searching for their first home win at the Volkswagen Arena in over five months.
Tiago Tomàs opened the scoring for Wolfsburg with an unusual goal in front of 28,917 fans. However, Mitchell Weiser equalized for Bremen just before halftime (45.+5). The second half was dominated by Werder, with goals from Felix Agu (51′), Marvin Ducksch (67′), and Marco Grüll (72′) sealing their victory. Wolfsburg’s Patrick Wimmer (68′) received a red card for a dangerous foul just minutes after being substituted, while Joakim Maehle (79′) managed to score a consolation goal for the hosts.
Fast Start for Werder Bremen
Bremen made an electrifying start, taking charge of the match early on and consistently pushing forward. Marco Grüll had a chance to score within seconds of the kickoff, but his shot was deflected. As the game progressed, Wolfsburg also began to find their rhythm. Jakub Kaminski (13′) came close with a long-range effort that soared over the bar.
Wolfsburg took a surprising lead through Tomás, who capitalized on a mistake from Werder goalkeeper Michael Zetterer after a corner kick by Maximilian Arnold. Zetterer failed to clear the ball properly, leading to Tomàs scoring with a deft heel touch—marking the sixth set-piece goal of the season for Wolfsburg.
Although they were somewhat fortunate to lead, Wolfsburg had been the more threatening side leading up to that goal. Mohammed Amoura consistently created chances, including a notable assist to Kaminski (40′), who was thwarted by Zetterer. Just as it appeared Wolfsburg would head into the break in front, Bremen drew level with Weiser’s well-timed strike. Notably, Wolfsburg’s captain, Maximilian Arnold, had left the pitch due to injury shortly before halftime.
Arnold’s Absence Felt
Arnold had sustained an injury during a challenge, and his slow exit from the field led to him receiving a fifth yellow card (42), resulting in a suspension for the next match. Bremen also had to adapt, as defender Anthony Jung was unable to continue due to a right thigh injury and was replaced by Amos Pieper.
Emerging from the break with renewed energy, Werder capitalized quickly. Marvin Ducksch (48′) missed an early chance, but just minutes later, he assisted Agu for the 2:1 lead. Agu’s shot went under the body of Wolfsburg’s goalkeeper, Kamil Grabara, to give Bremen the lead.
The match grew increasingly intense, with both teams creating opportunities. Ducksch finally found the back of the net (67′), followed by an impressive goal from Grüll (72′). At this point, Wolfsburg was weakened further by Wimmer’s red card. Although Maehle’s late goal (79′) provided some solace, it did little to alleviate the disappointment for Wolfsburg’s faithful fans.
