Wells Fargo Championship | Rory McIlroy comes within one shot of Xander Schauffele

(Charlotte) Rory McIlroy delivered a bogey-free round of 67 on Saturday, coming within one shot of Xander Schauffele, the leader at the Wells Fargo Championship.


Schauffele started the day four shots ahead of McIlroy and Jason Day.

He played 70 for 201 (12 under par), he who wants to end a drought of 38 tournaments without a victory.

Sungjae Im (69) is four shots from the lead, one shot ahead of Sepp Straka, who returned a card of 67.

Day suffered five bogeys en route to a 73. He slipped to seven shots from the top.

Day limited the damage late in the round, making three birdies in five holes.

McIlroy made two birdies in a row starting on the ninth hole, then he came within one stroke of Schauffele when the latter made bogey on the 12the hole.

Schauffele holed a long putt for birdie at 14ewhich helped him stay in control.

Straka has been knocked out of the weekend rounds four times this season, but he’s also finished four times in the top 25.

He just placed fifth at the RBC Heritage Classic in South Carolina.

Canadian Taylor Pendrith is at 209 after a 71. The Ontarian won his first PGA tournament last weekend at Byron Nelson.

Corey Conners (18)e place), MacKenzie Hughes (24e), Adam Svensson (34e), Nick Taylor (34e) and Adam Hadwin (59e) are the other Canadians at the tournament.
