(Charlotte) Rory McIlroy won the Wells Fargo Championship for a fourth time on Sunday, erasing a two-shot deficit to beat Xander Schauffele by five shots.
No other player has won this tournament on more than two occasions.
McIlroy shot a 65 (under 6), taking six shots off par in the last 11 holes, even though he made a double bogey at the 18th.e pennant.
He finished the tournament with a cumulative score of minus-17 after four rounds in the 60s. McIlroy won his second straight PGA tournament, after teaming with Shane Lowry to win the Zurich Classic.
Schauffele played 71.
McIlroy trailed by two shots after Schauffele made an eagle on the seventh hole. The second player in the world, however, has moved into another gear.
The Northern Irishman tied the game with a birdie at the eighth and ninth holes and then scored an eagle at the 10th.e pennant to take the lead for the first time in the tournament.
Schauffele’s bogey at 12e hole allowed McIlroy to breathe a little.
McIlroy’s final round was reminiscent of 2010, when he carded six straight 3s to defeat Phil Mickelson for his first career PGA victory. He also triumphed at this event in 2015 and 2021.
The South Korean Byeong Hun An brought back a card of 66 to seize the third level alone. Jason Day (70) and Sungjae Im (73) shared fourth place.
