Our Cassandras

The exceptional journey of the D^D Joanne Liu, former international president of Doctors Without Borders, is at the heart of the piece Our Cassandras. Actress Jade Barshee lends her voice and features to this Quebecer who traveled the world to treat the sick in countries affected by war and epidemics. A moving piece which unfolds without artifice, but where we feel revolt and helplessness coexist in the heart of this woman of conviction. At Espace Libre until February 3.

The return of Ute Lemper

A rare visit to Montreal this weekend! German actress and singer Ute Lemper will be at the Maison symphonique de la Place des Arts on January 28. In Ute Lemper: From Berlin to Broadway, the cabaret artist will offer a look back at his 40-year career, with a range of the great standards of the musical repertoire of the last century. On the program, works by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht, Broadway classics (Cabaret And Chicago) and French song (from Piaf to Brel). She will also perform in Toronto, at Massey Hall, on January 26.

Shortly after participating in a forro evening at the La Cale pub, rue Saint-Hubert, Flavia Nascimento returns to Montreal for a concert under her name at Balattou on Friday. This time she will offer a mix of Brazilian hits and her original songs, inspired by both Afro-Brazilian music and popular Brazilian music. She promises a concert marked by “joyfulness and tenderness” during which she will also “swing the bacaisse in the bottom of the wood box”!

1990s hip-hop in photos

Tupac, RZA, Erykah Badu, Wyclef Jean, Lauryn Hill, Ol’Dirty Bastard… T. Eric Monroe immortalized them all. One of the most respected photographers in hip-hop culture presents part of his work for the first time in Quebec while Rare and Unseen Moments of 90’s Hip Hop is located at the VerdunLuv pop-up boutique until February 4. Banartmann, a visual art consulting service focused on urban art, is behind the coming of the exhibition which tells “a visual story captured through the lens of the artist before the digital age.” For the occasion, a limited edition of a photo of Tupac Shakur is on sale. It will be possible to meet the American photographer on Saturday January 27, between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. An evening with DJ will follow at P2 (4847 Wellington Street).
