Wednesday night in the NHL | Jack Hughes plays hero in overtime

Read the game reports from Wednesday, December 13 in the NHL.

Jack Hughes scored with 2:13 left in overtime and the New Jersey Devils came from behind to defeat the Boston Bruins 2-1 on Wednesday, despite a 33-save performance from Jeremy Swayman.

Dawson Mercer tied the game in the third period and Vitek Vanecek stopped 23 pucks to help the Devils win their seventh game in nine outings.

Jesper Bratt extended his streak to six games with at least one point with an assist on the winning goal. He found Hughes, in the left circle, who deceived Swayman’s vigilance with his third shot of the extra period.

Morgan Geekie found the back of the net for the Bruins, who are now 13-1-3 when leading after two periods. They have won four of their last six games.

The Bruins were without defenseman Charlie McAvoy for a second straight game and forward Pavel Zacha, both sidelined with upper-body injuries.

Mathew Barzal, Kyle Palmieri and Casey Cizikas also threaded the needle for the Islanders, who have won four straight and six of their last seven. Noah Dobson had two assists and Semyon Varlamov made 20 saves.

The Islanders are 9-1-4 in their last 14 games and are four points behind the New York Rangers in first place in the Metropolitan Division.

Troy Terry, Adam Henrique and Sam Carrick scored for the Ducks, who have lost their last four games and 12 of their last 13. John Gibson stopped 30 pucks.

Ross Johnston received a standing ovation from Islanders fans when a video tribute was played midway through the first period. Johnson played for seven seasons with the Islanders before being claimed by the Ducks on waivers in October.
