Frédérick Gaudreau scores twice in Wild win
Frédérick Gaudreau scored two goals, including one from deep into an empty net, and led the Minnesota Wild to a 4-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night.
Mats Zuccarello picked up a point in his eighth straight second-period goal. Matt Dumba, with his third, scored the other winners’ net.
Goaltender Filip Gustavsson stopped 16 pucks for the Wild, which posted a third straight victory. Gustavsson only yielded to Elmer Soderblom in the second period.
On the other end, Magnus Hellberg made his second start of the season and sixth of his NHL career. He made 18 saves and couldn’t prevent the Red Wings from suffering a fourth straight loss.
Both clubs scored a goal each within 16 seconds late in the second period.
A home turnaround led to Soderblom’s third goal of the season, which reduced the Wild’s lead to 2-1 with 1:19 remaining in the middle frame. Zuccarello, despite being on his knees, immediately restored the Wild to a two-goal lead.
Gaudreau had scored the only goal of the first period, during a power play, thanks to a shot that made its way into the back of the net despite a lot of traffic in front of the Red Wings goal.
Dumba made it 2-0 at 8:02 of the second period.
