William Nylander double propels Leafs to victory
Mitch Marner and William Nylander scored 20 seconds apart with less than nine minutes remaining in the third period and the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Dallas Stars 5-4 on Wednesday.
Nylander finished the game with two goals and an assist. Auston Matthews for his part registered his 41e net of the season, a high in the National Hockey League.
John Tavares was the other scorer for the Maple Leafs, who scored three times on the power play. He was also an accomplice in two of his team’s goals. Ilya Samsonov made 27 saves.
Evgenii Dadonov scored twice for the Stars. The former Montreal Canadiens color wearer notably created the tie at 3-3 midway through the third during a penalty shot.
Jamie Benn and Wyatt Johnston also moved the ropes for the Texas club. Scott Wedgewood stopped 26 shots while Jake Oettinger enjoyed a day off following a 2-1 win over the Sabers on Tuesday in Buffalo.

Mikhail Sergachev injures leg in Lightning setback
Jimmy Vesey scored two goals, goaltender Jonathan Quick blocked 19 pucks and the New York Rangers signed a third straight victory, 3-1 against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday night.
Jonny Brodzinski scored the other goal for the Rangers, who won for the second time in three days since returning from the All-Star break. Quick started each of these two games.
Brandon Hagel served the Lightning’s response and Andrei Vasilevskiy made 21 saves. The Lightning had won their previous three games and had recorded eight wins in nine outings before facing the Rangers.
This match was marked by a striking injury to Mikhail Sergachev about seven minutes into the second period.
The Lightning defenseman had to leave the ice on a stretcher after his left leg bent abnormally following an incident involving Alexis Lafrenière near the ramp.
The Rangers forward was about to grab the puck when he saw Sergachev arrive, who was slightly behind him. Lafrenière reacted by serving a shoulder shot to Sergachev’s chest. That’s when Sergachev’s left skate blade seemed to get stuck in the ice and his leg bent at an unusual angle.
After falling onto the ice, Sergachev grabbed his left knee and appeared to cry out in pain.
All the Lightning’s color-wearers left the bench to gather around their teammate. Players from both teams went to Sergachev, who left the ice on a stretcher.
“At the end of the day, you have your biological family, but [ces joueurs] are the ones you spend almost your whole life with,” Lightning head coach Jon Cooper said after the game. The emotions were present. The Rangers were worried about him. They all left the bench. It’s much more than hockey. »
Sergachev appeared to be in tears as he held his sweater close to his face while sitting on the stretcher. He gave a thumbs up to the crowd at Madison Square Garden.
Before the second period ended, Lightning management announced that Sergachev would miss the remainder of the game with a lower body injury.
Sergachev returned to action Wednesday after missing the previous 17 games with a leg injury suffered in December.
“Super tough,” Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman said. To see him in so much pain upon his return to the game. You pray for the best, but obviously, it doesn’t look good. »
The Russian defenseman is in his seventh season with the Lightning. He has played 475 career games, including four with the Montreal Canadiens, who selected him ninth overall in the 2016 NHL draft.
Vesey opened the scoring at 1:15 of the second period and Brodzinski made it 2-0 with 2:14 remaining in the period.
Hagel cut the Rangers’ lead at 5:29 of the third period, but Vesey completed his double into an empty net with 61 seconds on the clock.
