Panthers blank Hurricanes 3-0
Spencer Knight was perfect in front of 39 shots and the Florida Panthers shut out the Carolina Hurricanes 3-0 on Wednesday night.
It was Knight’s first shutout this season and third of his NHL career.
Nick Cousins, Aleksander Barkov and Sam Bennett have threaded the needle for the Panthers, who have won their last two games.
The Florida troupe, which begins a five-game stay at home, shows a record of 5-0 this season in its amphitheatre.
Antti Raanta stopped 34 pucks for the Hurricanes, who suffered a second straight loss after winning their previous four outings.
Cousins opened the scoring midway through the first period. Barkov accepted a pass from Carter Verhaeghe to double the lead on the power play, while Bennett sealed the game in an empty net.
Penguins beat Capitals to finally get back to winning ways
Casey DeSmith stopped 24 shots and the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Washington Capitals 4-1 on Wednesday night to end their seven-game losing streak.
DeSmith picked up a first win this season and the Penguins won for the first time since Oct. 22. It was the team’s longest losing streak since 2006.
Jason Zucker and Brock McGinn took advantage of the largesse of goaltender Darcy Kuemper to find the back of the net in the second period. Jeff Petry and Jake Guentzel also scored for the Penguins.
Marcus Johansson was the lone scorer for the Capitals, who have lost five of their last six outings. Kuemper gave up three times on 27 shots.
Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin both started the game with 1,423 career NHL points. Crosby got an assist while Ovechkin was cleared from the scoresheet.
