Rangers win by shutout

Igor Shesterkin was perfect in front of 29 shots and the New York Rangers blanked the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-0 to open their season on Wednesday night.

Shesterkin, who reportedly turned down a lucrative $11 million per season contract extension, became the first Rangers goalie since Gump Worsley in 1956 to record a shutout in their season opener.

It was the 16the career shutout for the 28-year-old Russian, who had four during the last campaign.

Chris Kreider scored twice for the reigning Metropolitan Division champions. Alexis Lafrenière, who added an assist, Sam Carrick, Filip Chytil and Vincent Trocheck also threaded the needle in a winning cause.

Artemi Panarin and Jacob Trouba both finished the game with two assists for the Rangers, who defeated the Penguins for the fifth time in their last six games.

Tristan Jarry gave up six times in 41 shots in front of the Penguins cage. Sidney Crosby was shut out in the first game of his 20e season in Pittsburgh.
