Devils shut out Flyers 3-0
Mackenzie Blackwood blocked 25 pucks and the New Jersey Devils posted a 3-0 shutout victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday.
As the Devils ended a four-game losing streak, they handed the Flyers a 10e setback away.
Jesper Bratt scored in the second period before getting an assist on the power play goal from rookie Dawson Mercer later in the halfway window.
Michael McLeod added an empty goal late in the third period for the Devils, who beat the Flyers for the second time in 10 days.
In the loss, the team’s second since interim head coach Mike Yeo came on the scene, goaltender Carter Hart made 24 saves.
The Flyers (0-8-2) are only two losses away from matching their team mark for the most consecutive losses (0-8-4). This record was set between February 24 and March 16, 1999.
The Flyers’ last victory dates back to Nov. 16, 2-1 over the Calgary Flames.
The Arizona Coyotes and New York Islanders have the longest playoffs of their kind this season in the NHL, with 11 straight losses.
After a goalless first period, Bratt broke the tie at 5.30 of the second period.
Posted outside the right face-off circle, he accepted a side pass from Nico Hischier and beat Hart with a shot that slipped between the Flyers goaltender and the vertical rod.
Just over six minutes later, Mercer doubled the Devils lead in a power play. Defenseman Ty Smith took a shot from the blue line which Mercer deflected behind Hart.
Blackwood had an easy night on the way to his second shutout of the season. He made his toughest save in the third period against defender Travis Sanheim, who had rounded two rivals before approaching the net and directing a backhand shot
Sanheim has yet to score a goal in 24 games this season.
