Auston Matthews scored his 54e goal of the season at 4:20 of the overtime period and the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Buffalo Sabers 2-1 on Wednesday night.

William Nylander scored in regulation and goaltender Ilya Samsonov blocked 23 shots in the victory.

Victor Olofsson scored for the Sabres. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 25 saves.

Matthews took a pass from teammate Mitchell Marner and scored the game-winner in overtime.

Just before, Samsonov made a superb glove save against Tage Thompson.

Nylander opened the scoring 2:29 into the second period. It was his 34e net of the countryside.

Olofsson tied the game at 6:31, beating Samsonov with his fifth goal of the season.

Sick, defenseman Jake McCabe was not in the Maple Leafs lineup.
