A goal from Pierre Engvall in disadvantage wins the Leafs

Pierre Engvall scored a shorthanded goal with 4:42 remaining in the third period, and the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the New Jersey Devils 3-2 on Wednesday night.

The Maple Leafs forward came into Devils territory on a 2-on-1 push, when Ilya Mikheyev was in jail after picking up a minor double for high sticking.

Engvall delayed his move before unleashing a shot that beat goalkeeper Nico Daws from the short side. This was his 11and goal of the season.

Mikheyev, also shorthanded, and Mitch Marner scored the other Maple Leafs goals (40-18-5). Goaltender Petr Mrazek saved 20 pucks.

Nico Hischier scored a goal for the Devils (24-35-5) and added an assist on Damon Severson’s net. Daws made 28 saves.

This game marked Mark Giordano’s debut with the Maple Leafs. The 38-year-old veteran defender formed the third defensive pair with Timothy Liljegren.

Acquired in the same trade with the Seattle Kraken, forward Colin Blackwell also took part in the game. He evolved on the trio completed by Jason Spezza and Wayne Simmonds.
