Maple Leafs win 2-1 over Devils

Matt Murray stopped 34 shots and the New Jersey Devils’ winning streak was cut to 13 following a 2-1 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday.

The Devils had the opportunity to break a team record with a 14e consecutive victory. Their efforts were notably undermined by three disallowed goals.

John Tavares and Pontus Holmberg scored in the first period for the Maple Leafs, who became the first team to beat the Devils since the Washington Capitals on Oct. 24.

Dougie Hamilton scored for the Devils with 5:08 left in the game.

Murray shut the door on the Devils late in the game, frustrating Jesper Bratt, Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier in turn with golden chances to score.

The Devils were unlucky, hitting the post twice against the Maple Leafs. Goals from Nate Bastian and Damon Severson were disallowed for goalie obstruction in the first and second periods respectively. For his part, Erik Haula was denied a goal in the third period because he directed the puck into the goal with his skate.

Filip Hronek, Dylan Larkin and Michael Rasmussen moved the ropes for the Detroit squad. Hronek has scored a fourth goal in his last three games.

The Predators had gone 4-0-1 in their last five games and had won their last six meetings against the Red Wings.

Kevin Lankinen stopped 26 shots in a losing cause. It was the first start for him in almost two weeks.

Marcus Foligno du Wild

Marcus Foligno scored twice as the Minnesota Wild served a 6-1 correction to the Winnipeg Jets on Wednesday night.

Matt Boldy had a goal and two assists for the Wild. Kirill Kaprizov, Mason Shaw and Cam Addison all added a goal. Filip Gustavsson made 28 saves.

Kaprizov sparkled the red light from the 28e second of the third period, bringing his streak of games with at least one point to seven.

Foligno had only scored one goal this season, in the Wild’s second game. The veteran gave the team a 3-1 lead early in the third period before adding a net following a nice trade with Joel Eriksson Ek.

Gustavsson was making his third straight start in net for the Wild due to an upper-body injury to Marc-André Fleury.

Kyle Connor was the only Jets player to blacken the scoresheet. Connor Hellebuyck gave up six times on 39 shots.
