Jakob Pelletier scores game-changing goal in Flames win

Jakob Pelletier scored the game-changing goal in the third period on Wednesday, guiding the Calgary Flames to a 6-3 win over the Arizona Coyotes.

The 21-year-old Quebecer scored his second NHL goal at 4:53, deflecting a Noah Hanifin shot.

Matias Maccelli was in jail, having tripped Jonathan Huberdeau.

Walker Duehr doubled the base 24 seconds later, then Mikael Backlund completed at 16:41. Pelletier did a great job on that goal as well.

Milan Lucic, Elias Lindholm and Tyler Toffoli were the other scorers for the Flames, who were beginning a three-game road trip.

Author of 11 stops, Dan Vladar was thwarted by Maccelli, Clayton Keller and Nick Schmaltz. Karel Vejmelka stopped 45 shots.

It was the Flames’ fourth line that gave the visitors a 1-0 lead at 4:39 into the first period.

Trevor Lewis worked well down the boards and then Duehr grabbed the puck. He headed into the slot and made a short pass to Lucic, who got his fifth goal of the season.

Late in the first period, the post deprived Lawson Crouse of the Coyotes and Blake Coleman of the Flames.

Schmaltz created the deadlock with a second goal in two games at 1:11 in the middle period.

In the 10e minute of the period, Chris Tanev sent the disc into his own net on the rebound from a shot by Shayne Gostisbehere. The goal was awarded to Keller.

Maccelli made it 3-1 at 11:06 of the same engagement. He kept the puck on a 2-on-1 and scored on the short side.

Calgary, however, tied the game with two goals in 62 seconds before the second intermission. Lindholm took advantage of a rebound, then Toffoli hit the target with a high shot.

Arizona had won four straight at home.

The Flames will be in Las Vegas on Thursday and Colorado on Saturday.

The Flames are two points behind the Wild, holder of the last place giving access to the playoffs in the West. Minnesota has a game in hand.

Simon Holmstrom broke the tie in the third period, Ilya Sorokin stopped 25 shots and the New York Islanders beat the Winnipeg Jets 2-1 on Wednesday night.

Sebastian Aho also scored for the Islanders, who have won three of their last four games. The Islanders have also won their last six games against the Jets.

Connor Hellebuyck made 20 saves and Nikolaj Ehlers scored the Jets’ lone goal. They completed a four-game road trip with a 1-3 record.

With the score at 1-1, Hellebuyck struggled to recover a loose puck after a point-blank shot from Matt Martin. Holmstrom was able to fire a mitt-side shot and give the Islanders a 2-1 lead at 9:57 of the third period.

Bo Horvat made two great passes on the streak, setting the stage for Martin’s shot, then Holmstrom’s.

Dylan DeMelo was penalized for a slash on Kyle Palmieri with 2:31 left in the third period, undermining the Jets’ comeback effort.
