Patrice Bergeron scores game-winning goal for Bruins

Patrice Bergeron broke the deadlock by scoring with 4:09 left in the third period and the Boston Bruins defeated the New Jersey Devils 3-1 on Wednesday.

Trent Frederic and Pavel Zacha, in an empty net, also scored for the Bruins, who lead the NHL with a 28-4-3 record. Linus Ullmark stopped 30 shots.

Nico Hischier was the Devils’ lone scorer. Vitek Vanecek made 24 saves.

Bergeron played the heroes by deflecting a shot from Hampus Lindholm behind Vanecek. Bergeron thus marked his 14e goal of the season.

Hischier had equalized after 6:11 in the third period, taking advantage of a fine pass from Fabian Zetterlund.

Frederic opened the scoring after 8:57 of play in the second period. Lindholm intercepted a Devils punt attempt, then Frederic moved the ropes with a throw from the crease.

Red Wings win 5-4 over Penguins

Jake Walman flashed the red light after 2:13 of overtime and the Detroit Red Wings erased a four-goal deficit before beating the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-4 on Wednesday.

Walman played heroes by deflecting a return past goaltender Casey DeSmith for his second goal of the season.

The Penguins suffered a 5-1 road loss to the New York Islanders on Tuesday, while the Red Wings played their first game since Dec. 21.

The Penguins started the game strong, scoring four goals on 12 shots in the first period.

Dylan Larkin led the charge for the Red Wings by scoring on the power play in the second period. David Perron completed the comeback by scoring a third goal in as many games.

Jonatan Berggren and Joe Veleno also hit the mark for the Red Wings.

Magnus Hellberg took over for Ville Husso in the second half and made 19 saves. Husso stopped eight shots in the first period.

Jason Zucker scored twice, Jeff Carter added a goal and an assist, while Drew O’Connor scored his first goal of the season for the Penguins.

DeSmith made 41 saves.

The Red Wings were still down 4-2 heading into the third period. Berggren reduced the lead to just one goal with five minutes left in regulation time. Perron then scored his 12e goal of the season with 3:07 to play, during a power play.
