Maple Leafs win 5-2 over Blackhawks

Auston Matthews had a goal and an assist for his return from injury on Wednesday as the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Chicago Blackhawks 5-2.

William Nylander added a goal and two assists, while John Tavares and Rasmus Sandin each provided a goal and an assist.

Connor Timmins scored the Leafs’ other goal and Ilya Samsonov made 27 saves.

Sam Lafferty and Philipp Kurashev scored for the Hawks, while Petr Mrazek blocked 37 shots.

The Leafs scored nine seconds after the initial face-off, with Nylander slipping away before picking up a 30e goal this season.

Fifty-three seconds later, the visitors responded with Lafferty (his ninth goal of the season, after Calle Jarnkrok lost the puck.

Sandin put Toronto back in front later in the period with a shot that hit a Chicago stick.

Alexander Kerfoot looked to have given Toronto a 3-1 lead just 15 seconds later, but the Blackhawks called for offside, with good reason.

A few minutes later, Matthews scored his 26e goal of the season, courtesy of Nylander.
