Weather in Quebec: the cold is back, the frost too

Quebecers can take their coats out for a few more days before they can put them away once and for all.

Even though the weather will generally be sunny in southern Quebec, temperatures will be below normal for the season, due to an atmospheric trough that has caused temperatures to drop sharply.

In Montreal and Quebec, Wednesday morning, the mercury was between 3 and 5 degrees, and a maximum temperature of only 10 degrees is expected during the afternoon.

If these are rather cold temperatures and “below seasonal normals”, this is not a record, however, said André Cantin, meteorologist for Environment Canada, in an interview with the QMI Agency.

In areas of western Quebec, the mercury will drop even more, to the point that the federal agency predicts a return of wind chill, particularly in the Outaouais.

The worst is yet to come since it will be the coldest night from Wednesday to Thursday in southern Quebec.

Environment Canada has also issued a freeze notice, in particular for the region of Montreal, Quebec, the Laurentians, Lanaudière, Estrie, Mauricie.

“Mercury will drop below freezing. This episode of frost is likely to be damaging to crops,” said Mr. Cantin, who advises protecting plants that are vulnerable to frost.

Temperatures should gradually rise, with between 15 and 25 degrees expected Thursday and Friday everywhere.

A new episode of frost is however under Environment Canada’s radar for the night of Sunday to Monday, but according to the meteorologist, it could possibly be “the last”.
