Weather in Quebec | More than 100 millimeters of rain in the Montreal region

Montreal has recorded nearly 100 millimeters of precipitation since Friday evening, and the rain continues to fall. Elsewhere in the province, such as Quebec and Charlevoix, the worst of the rain is expected to arrive in the evening on Saturday.

Until now, the low pressure system affecting Quebec crosses an axis that goes from the southwest of Montérégie to Lanaudière. Right in the middle: the Montreal region, where significant quantities of water have already accumulated. At Saint-Hubert airport, 115 millimeters of rain had been recorded at 4 p.m.

On the Montreal side, the downtown station showed 99 millimeters of accumulated rain at 4 p.m. Saturday. “It’s huge and it continues to fall,” underlines Julien Chartrand, meteorologist for Environment Canada.

Another 20 to 30 millimeters of water is expected in Montreal by Sunday. The metropolis could therefore have to absorb a total of more than 100 millimeters of water. “It doesn’t happen often,” notes the meteorologist. Remember that for the entire month of September, only 27 millimeters of rain were recorded in the metropolis, well below normal.

Lanaudière is the second most affected region with between 80 and 100 millimeters accumulated as of 4 p.m. Saturday.

The rest of the province less affected

Water accumulations have so far less affected other regions of the province. In Outaouais, 10 to 25 millimeters of rain have fallen so far. In Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, in Montérégie, 55 millimeters were recorded at 4 p.m. In Lanaudière, between 80 and 100 millimeters.

Precipitation barely affected the Estrie region. In Trois-Rivières, around twenty millimeters were observed. In the Laurentians, between 20 and 60 millimeters of water fell depending on the sector.

In Quebec and Charlevoix, the heaviest precipitation is expected to begin Saturday evening. In Charlevoix, north of the St. Lawrence River, 80 to 100 millimeters of water could fall in places. In Quebec, precipitation should be around 25 to 50 millimeters.

Towards the east of the province, that is to say in Bas-Saint-Laurent and Gaspésie, the quantities should also be lower: 20 to 40 millimeters for Bas-Saint-Laurent, and up to 40 millimeters in Gaspésie.

Fusion with the storm Philip

This low pressure system arriving from the west is expected to merge with the remnants of the tropical storm on Saturday Philip, coming from the Maritimes. “It will result in a major depression system,” specifies Julien Chartrand. The rain that we expect near Quebec and Charlevoix is rather associated with Philip. »

Due to the tropical storm, some areas could experience stronger winds. In Quebec, gusts could reach 60 to 70 kilometers/hour on Sunday. The North Shore and the Gaspé Peninsula will also face significant winds. A wind warning is also in effect for part of the North Shore, with gusts that could reach 90 kilometers/hour.

Beware of flooding and landslides

Several streets in Montreal were subject to accumulations of water as of Saturday morning. In some cases, water overflowed onto sidewalks and the grounds of surrounding houses, it was observed The Press. Several areas frequently flooded during heavy rains were once again under the fleet.

The City of Montreal has indicated that it is monitoring the situation closely. “For the moment, the impacts are minor and all our viaducts are open,” said public relations officer Laurianne Tardif by email. “Our teams are ready to intervene [au besoin]. »

“With these quantities of rain, it is certain that it can cause impacts, such as river overflows, accumulations of water on the road and landslides, especially in mountainous regions,” specifies Mr. Chartrand .

Residents of the Laurentians, Lanaudière and Charlevoix are invited to be careful near watercourses to avoid land subsidence, in particular.

La Ronde closed Saturday

The La Ronde amusement park announced that it would close its doors on Saturday due to the significant amounts of rain expected in the metropolis. “We want to present to our visitors the extraordinary experience of our Pumpkin Festival and Fright Festival, which could not be offered with the forecast weather conditions,” the company indicated on social networks. Tickets purchased in advance for Saturday can be used “for another day in October 2023”, specifies La Ronde.
