Weather | First snowflakes expected in Quebec at the start of the week

Prepare your gloves: a cold front will bring the temperature below seasonal norms on Sunday. A few snowflakes could even be seen in several regions of Quebec, or even more in the mountains.

Autumn as we know it returns on Sunday. A cold front and high pressure are expected to bring temperatures below seasonal norms from midday Saturday. In Montreal for example, if the mercury is expected to reach 19 degrees Celsius on Saturday, it will only be 7 degrees on Sunday, and 6 degrees on Monday.

The scenario is similar in different regions of the province. On the Quebec side, the temperature forecast for Saturday is 17 degrees Celsius, and 4 degrees for Sunday. The temperature should decrease from the middle of the day on Saturday, at the same time as the change in wind direction, warns Dominic Martel, meteorologist for Environment Canada.

The first snowflakes are arriving

In addition to the cold, the first snowflakes of the season should appear in the province on Sunday evening. Indeed, a low pressure system will affect the majority of regions of the province at the end of the day Sunday.

If rain is mainly expected, it could turn into wet snow in places, such as Quebec, Trois-Rivières or Drummondville.

Light accumulations of snow could even occur in the mountainous regions of the province, such as in the Laurentians, Charlevoix, or in Estrie. The low pressure system will then move eastward. Gaspésie and the North Shore could in turn see a few snowflakes arriving at the start of the week.

In terms of precipitation, Quebec will experience a period of calm at the start of the week before the arrival of a new low pressure system on Thursday or Friday.
