Cool, wet weather makes a difference in Jasper National Park.
The park released a statement on social media late Thursday night, saying cooler temperatures and up to 15 millimeters of rain since midnight had led to minimal fire activity.
The park said that due to the rainfall, fire behavior is expected to calm down over the next 72 hours.
With more rain expected Friday, temperatures are expected to return to around 25 degrees Celsius by Saturday, which the park says will lead to increased fire activity.
The town of Jasper and the park have been besieged by wildfires, with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith estimating Thursday that a third to half of all buildings in Jasper have burned.
The federal government has approved Alberta’s request for emergency assistance to fight the wildfires. Emergency Preparedness Minister Harjit Sajjan said all necessary resources will be deployed to fight the fires.
