Having barely fallen, the thick layer of snow already present in southern Quebec risks melting visibly by Monday morning, showered by 20 to 40 millimeters of rain depending on the region.
A small glimmer of hope, this “major low pressure system” which will begin Sunday morning will gradually change to snow starting Monday morning.
But until then, the corridor going from Montreal and Estrie to Quebec, via Centre-du-Québec, should receive between 20 to 40 mm of rain. First intermittent at daybreak on Sunday, the rain should then intensify in the afternoon and evening.
“In Montreal, it will be close to 25 mm while towards Quebec it should be around 35 to 40 mm,” explains the meteorologist at Environment Canada, Mircea Oltean.
Then, Monday morning, precipitation should turn into snow with accumulations expected of 2 to 4 cm for the metropolitan region, but up to 5 to 10 cm for areas further south such as Estrie and Beauce.
Can we talk about the first weather cocktail of the season? Meteorologist Mircea Oltean nuance. “I would talk more about rain changing to snow, but as certain regions of Central Quebec could also receive a mixture of freezing rain, rain, snow, that’s a bit more of a cocktail.”
Returning to work Monday morning could also be complicated by the “gradual drop in temperatures below freezing combined with the change in the type of precipitation,” warns Environment Canada.
