Sanitary masks will be from Friday December 31st again compulsory outdoors. The measure is not national, but millions of French people will however be concerned.

Sanitary masks will be back on Friday December 31 in the streets of Paris and much of France, from the age of 11. About fifty departments will impose the wearing of masks in certain towns. The measure is not suitable for everyone. “For years we have been wearing it, it has become a bit of rubbish”, estimates a passerby.

Incidence rates are skyrocketing everywhere. In the capital, there are 2,008 positive cases per 100,000 inhabitants, or 2.5 times the national average. In Lyon (Rhône), the figures are also alarming, with 1,028 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The obligation to wear a mask will last three weeks. For some doctors, however, the measurement is not always relevant outdoors. “The vast majority of contaminations take place indoors, in closed rooms with little ventilation, such as bars or restaurants”, explains Professor Mahmoud Zureik, epidemiologist.
