Wearing a mask is compulsory on certain open-air markets in Île-de-Ré (Charente-Maritime). Four municipalities have made this decision.

Those who cross the July 14 bridge for a vacation on Île-de-Ré are warned. The mask is now mandatory in certain markets, such as La Couarde-sur-mer. Some are unaware, and improvise. “I didn’t have a mask, so I had a scarf in my bag to protect my face“, explains a passer-by. On the market, the inhabitants are touch-to-key. An unusual crowd for the month of July.

The mayor of La Couarde has therefore decided to take a decree, without issuing a ticket for the moment. “You can’t put an usher behind every person and say ‘step aside, you’re more than ten. The safety of people prevailing over the rest, we are in the ordinance which effectively says that if the meter cannot be respected, the mask must be imposed, this is the case in the metro.“, he explains.
