Like an air of déjà vu in the capital. The mask becomes mandatory again in the streets of Paris from Friday December 31 to face the “tsunami” the Omicron variant which has led to an outbreak of Covid-19 contaminations in France, as the capital’s police headquarters announced on Wednesday.

This obligation applies to people over 11 years old, “with the exception of persons circulating inside vehicles, cyclists and users of two wheels” or some “persons practicing a sporting activity”, said the prefecture in a press release.

The departments of Hauts-de-Seine, Yvelines, Essonne and Val-de-Marne are also affected by this obligation to wear the mask in the street, with some local adaptations. In Essonne, this measure only concerns built-up areas.

In Paris, the police headquarters also clarified the rules in force in the capital for New Year’s Eve, on the night from Friday to Saturday. Bars and restaurants will close at 2 a.m. “dance activities in all establishments open to the public” will be banned, just like “gatherings of people giving rise to the consumption of alcoholic beverages on public roads”. In many areas, the consumption of alcohol and the take-out sale of these drinks will be prohibited from 6 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Saturday.
