“We wondered how long it was going to last, we were scared,” says Minister Caroline Cayeux

The runway excursion at Orly airport of a Fly Amelia plane caused no injuries on the evening of Thursday, October 20. But the 39 passengers who left Rodez to land in the capital around 7:30 p.m. were scared. Minister Caroline Cayeux was on board and she told franceinfo about this complicated landing.

“We were scared”declares from the outset the Minister Delegate in charge of Territorial Communities. “We landed during a heavy storm with a lot of wind. The plane had trouble stopping because of the bad weather. But there was great professionalism from the plane team, the firefighters, the civil security services.

The 39 passengers were picked up by bus to reach the airport. Customers who had been warned that because of the weather, the landing was going to be difficult. “A quarter of an hour before landing, the pilot had announced it to us”says the minister. “He couldn’t avoid a big thunderstorm, so we were going to land and it would be a little sporty, that’s it. And then finally we landed a little shaken. And then the plane lands and I was like ‘ it’s good, we managed’. But in fact, he never stopped”.

According to Caroline Cayeux, the plane “pitched a bit like aquaplaning in a car. And so there were a few moments or a few seconds where we wondered how long it was going to last. There was a kind of shock. He must have touching, I don’t know, a plate. After that, we stopped in the middle of a field and I think we did 200m in the field.”

The minister saw the firefighters doing checks to avoid fire starts and waited for the bus. She was in Rodez this Thursday, October 20 to attend the 38th congress of the National Association of Mountain Elected Officials. “There were seven hours by train, so it was not possible to do it during the day”she justifies to explain her use of the plane.
